I have decided to do some canning, only I can't find any of those little rubber seals anywhere for all my jars and lids. Surely I know home gardening has become the new knitting, but I cannot imagine every shop in the NY metro area has run out. Do not make me go to the internets for them, it just doesn't seem right.

I just want to know what the pigeons did to anyone. They are a New York institution. Seriously. What's next? Old women napping on park benches? Children who forget to wash their hands?
Sometimes I do not even recognize the bland, faceless, blob of mediocrity and conformism New York is becoming.

I have to say, I've been rather quiet on the subject of patriotism and all it means, especially with that contest for a gadget which if that doesn't scream patriotism I don't know what does. I think it comes down to more than who can wave the red white and blue and shout the loudest however. My father died for our country, my son, both my sons really, lost their lives for this country in the end. I'm left an old man who teaches about history, and history is such a funny fickle thing. It's best to look at it from a perspective of time and rational thought and research, but in the end history is written by victors, as they always say.
I wonder what people will write about us now, our nation, a hundred years from today. Hard to think on. All those quiet moments of patriotism and sacrifice, the decision to enlist, the burying of a child, the stepping up and taking a stand against what you see is wrong, even if it isn't the popular opinion. Patriotism has begun to be confused with patriotic fervor, a dogged support of the government despite its failings, where to show any sort of contradictory opinion is considered to be unpatriotic. Our nation is one of rebels, founded by a rag tag group of men and women who fought against incredible odds and by no logical reason should have won beyond the indomitable power of the human spirit. Perhaps that is a lesson we should take, of the ability of the little man to defeat Goliath, of the dangers of allowing the government and the big man to over run our lives and our individual freedoms. After 9/11 and again after 11/17, there was much talk about how individual freedoms must be compromised by necessity, for the greater liberty of all, and I will say now as I said then, that in that direction lies totalitarianism and disaster. The moment during which we find ourselves stepping away and allowing the government to have complete and unadulterated power over our movements, actions, and sentiments for the "greater good" we enter a long and slippery slope from which there may be no escape or recourse. We as Americans need to recall that a rag tag group of free men and women will always be stronger than even the largest of totalitarian states, we need to recall that in honoring our country and our freedoms we need not be a slave to an administration or a political dogma. We must, remember, that despite all obstacles our greatest asset has and always will be our individual choice and self determination. We as a people can be trusted to choose what is best for us, and as such we should examine our government and current changes and question it every day, otherwise we will become nothing more than puppets on a string. And that way lies certain disaster.

You know another sad thing about these bombings? My poor kitties were scared to death and didn't even come to be fed yesterday morning! This morning they've come back around but they look decidedly skittish. And who wouldn't with money fluttering around everywhere and loud booms in the night followed by what I am sure was a noteworthy performance by New York's finest. Of course it is always possible they decided to make off with some of the loot and squirrel it away for their secret catnip addiction. I wouldn't put it past them.

I can't help but sit here and remember when Texas was part of the United States. When I was growing up the main thing I remember about Texas was Davy Crockett and the Alamo and that the Dallas Cowboy's Cheerleaders were smokin.
I've heard that phrase Don't Mess With Texas most of my life, but I never really thought they considered themselves so separate from the rest of us. Of course from time to time when I see our Government's decisions and question them both in my own mind and in public forums, I cannot help but wonder where exactly that leaves the rest of us. There are ways of standing up and being heard without fully separating yourself from those you disagree with. Of course, sometimes you have to Remember the Alamo and stand for what you believe in, for what you have faith in as your country and as it should be, but personally I've always found it's much more entertaining sticking around and being a pain in the ass instead of walking away. But that's just me.

Am I the only one here bothered by the fact that the site of the former World Trade Center is now going to be used to farm catfish? Bottom dwellers. I do think that says it all. I expect soon Central Park is going to be coming a massive Chicken Farm.

There is nothing, I mean nothing, better than the whiff of a bit of civil unrest early in the morning to get your engines started. It even beats a cup of coffee and one of those scrummy danish meltaways from that German bakery down in what used to be the village.

All of this talk of contaminated lettuces and caffeinated chips has made me terribly hungry, which is most unfortunate. If it wasn't for that melamine scare back in the day, I would almost suggest we resort to eating pet food. I understand, however, that the bits of meal get caught up in your teeth something dreadfully.
I am thinking though I might whip up a nice batch of some vegan tacos. Sans lettuce of course. I do have a nice tomato coming up though on my plant outside. And I have a killer recipe for homemade re-fried beans. Only not literally, of course.
Ramona, love, could you pick up some hot sauce on the way home? Some of that one with all the x's on the label that I can never remember the name for.

Somehow, I find myself wondering quite suddenly if I will be forced into an early retirement. And wouldn't that be a shame, my friends. Just think, they'd have to hire at least two other people to replace what I do at the University.
Not to mention, of course, that no one looks nearly as distinguished in cap and gown as I do. Did you see the pictures of the commencement? I am the very tiny blob just to the left of the podium near the Dean for the College of Engineering. And if I may say so myself, I think he had fallen asleep.
